With a spotlight on pieces from the Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras ● The wide range of categories covered includes: furniture, sculpture, rugs and carpets, prints, jewellery, silver, ceramics and glass ● Arts and Crafts items feature motifs from the natural world, and, in reaction to the growth in mass produced goods from the mid-19th century, they were invariably made using traditional methods of manufacture ● Art Nouveau’s apogee was from 1890 to 1910, as a retort to the academic style of 19th century art and architecture it took inspiration from the sinuous curves of plants and flowers combined with a sense of dynamism and movement ● Art Deco, named after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts of 1925, chiefly differs from Art Nouveau in its use of cubism, giving designs a fragmented, geometric character. Floral and fauna are still seen, along with influences from ancient Egyptian art, Aztec and Central American art ● Decorative Arts also encompasses examples of Mid-century Modern design. Running roughly from 1945 to 1969 the movement is characterised by clean, simple lines, with materials used in a no-nonsense fashion devoid of embellishment and decoration. Mid-century Modern furniture combines function with form resulting in stylishly utilitarian interior settings ● Studio Pottery by 20th century British and European ceramicists is also offered on a regular basis ● Showing right: Early 20th century Bohemian amethyst cut glass vases, attributed to Koloman Moser | Available now in The Pedestal Shop
