How to Buy at Auction

Items offered for purchase at auction are catalogued, photographed and researched by our specialists and condition reports are available on request.


At our auctions you can bid either in person during the auction by registering in advance and using a 'paddle number', by booking a telephone bid or by leaving a commission bid 24 hours before the sale, which we will execute for you on your behalf. There is also the ability to register and leave a bid through our website.


You can also bid live online in the auction from wherever you happen to be as we list our sales on The Saleroom and Invaluable.


Please note that there is an additional surcharge to pay when buying through these bidding platforms, you are advised to check directly with your preferred bidding platform in advance before bidding.


Payment for all lots purchased including all associated fees, charges and taxes, is due no later than 7 calendar days after the auction.


Payment can be made only by the registered bidder.


Payment instructions can be found the relevant invoice or invoices. Please note that we do not accept payment by credit card.


A buyer’s premium of 25% on the first £50,000 of the hammer price of each lot, and 20% of any portion of such hammer price which is above £50,000, plus VAT is applicable. 


Lots cannot be collected and removed until the invoice for these lots has been paid.


All purchased lots may be collected from the auction venue up until 10am on the day after the auction or by prior appointment

Storage and Handling Charges on Lots returned to Cadogan Tate:


Storage will be Free of Charge for the first 14 calendar days following the date of sale (The Grace Period).


Handling/Administration: After the first 14 calendar days following the sale i.e. from the sale date, the following handling and administration charges will apply per Lot: 


Pictures and small objects - £22.50 VAT

Furniture, large pictures and large objects - £45.00 VAT


After the Grace Period the following storage charges apply:


Pictures and small objects - £3.03 per day VAT

Furniture, large pictures and large objects - £6.05 per day VAT


(note: 1. charges apply every day including weekends and Public Holidays, 2. Lot categories will be determined by Cadogan Tate at their absolute discretion)


Loss or Damage

Full Value Protection Cover for the value of the hammer price will be charged at 0.6% but will not exceed the total value of all other transfer and storage charges.


Value Added Tax

Will be applied at the current rate on all above charges.

Bidding increments in our auctions are as follows, (please note that these are subject to the auctioneer’s discretion):

Up to £500: -20/50/80

£500 - £1,000: -50

£1,000 – £2,000: -100

£2,000 - £5,000: -200/500/800

£5,000 - £10,000: -500

£10,000 – £20,000: -1,000

£20,000 – £50,000: -2,000/5,000/8,000

£50,000 - £100,000: -5,000

£100,000 and above: -increments are at the discretion of the auctioneer
