Silhouette reverse glass paintings were popular in the 19th century and well known ships of the period were a popular subject matter. HMS Victory was undoubtedly the most celebrated ship of the period. Victory was launched in 1865 and is best known for her role as Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.
