New in at The Pedestal Shop, and with perfect timing, we present three Hermès Birkin 35 handbags in bold leathers.

But, first, the backstory…
In the early 1980s the English actress Jane Birkin was sitting alongside Jean-Louis Dumas on an Air France flight from Paris to London. Dumas, Chairman of Hermès since 1978, had joined the family firm in 1964 at the age of 26. Where others might have ignored Birkin’s exasperation at the lack of capacious bags to carry her accessories, Dumas saw her lament as a plumb piece of market research. Within a short space of time, the empathetic Dumas had designed a deep supple holdall, distinguished by its polished plaque, swivel clasp and Hermès signature saddle stitching – developed in the 1800s.
And, so a legend was born…
Every Birkin handbag is handmade in France, hand-sewn, buffed, painted, and polished – a process which takes several days. Leathers are sourced from a number of French tanners, with each possessing its own unique aroma and texture.
It was widely acknowledged that a customer could wait up to six years to own a new Birkin, and in April 2010 Hermès closed its waiting list for the coveted handbag. However, the waiting list protocol has recently been re-instated at Hermès London Bond Street boutique. But, this exhausting process combined with strict quotas means that realistically the chance of obtaining a new Birkin handbag in a specific colour is virtually impossible.
The solution…
The Pedestal Shop currently features a selection of pre-owned Hermès Birkin 35s, and, with an eye to Spring, longer days and warmer weather, we present a trio here in fizzing hot colours – suitably eye-catching, yet still eminently practical, both for everyday and for dressing up a special ensemble.
Experience and expertise…
Our expert, Charlotte Rogers, a brand specialist in the fine fashion accessories and handbag markets, travels extensively throughout the year, adding continuously to her address book of dealers, contacts and collectors. Her own collection of vintage Hermès handbags frequently appears in high profile fashion magazines.
Commenting on current Birkin handbag trends, Charlotte says, ‘For Spring 2020 Hermès have brought out some exciting new colours in the blue and yellow families suggesting that the pre-loved blue and yellows are going to become hot colours this year. I advise every collector to choose colour for their hero bags. Once you own a black Birkin, add to your collection with bright, show stopping colours! – my top tip for the Birkin investor”.
